I wanted to draw Esmeralda as having two sides: a beautiful, opulent city, powered and community based around its' canals and waterways; then the walkways and balconies of the midnight roofs of the city, with secret routes and passages for Esmeralda's thieves, criminals and elicit lovers. I decided to draw Esmeralda in a secluded area behind mountains, as a mysterious, desirable place but hidden and slightly dangerous.
